Where to Find Free Legal Information

Get do-it-yourself help for common legal issues

By Sharon O'Brien, About.com

Legal issues can be intimidating. Sometimes you need to hire an attorney, but often all you need is good legal information. Even if you plan to consult a legal professional, it helps to do some homework ahead of time on the topics you want to discuss.

With a goal of helping people handle many of their own common legal matters -- or helping them work with lawyers more effectively -- Nolo has been providing detailed, reliable do-it-yourself legal information since 1971.

On the Nolo Web site, you will find legal information on many topics that are important to older adults and their caregivers, including:

  • Estate planning
  • Wills and powers of attorney
  • Personal finance
  • Elder care
  • Taxes
  • Housing & real estate
  • Starting a small business

In addition, Nolo offers free e-mail newsletters providing legal information.

Here's a message from Nolo's staff:
"If we ran the American legal system, we'd make it simpler, fairer, and more accessible to ordinary individuals and businesses. Our way of working for change is to publish top-notch materials people can use themselves. Americans who are armed with solid legal knowledge are confident, active participants in their legal system -- and slowly but inevitably, their participation makes that system more open and democratic."
