About.com Guide to Senior Living since 2004

Sharon O'Brien, MA, LMHC, is a licensed psychotherapist with a private practice in Portland, Oregon. The About.com Guide to Senior Living since 2004, Sharon is also a freelance writer specializing in the issues faced by people going through life transitions--as so many older adults are.

Experience:

Prior to becoming a therapist, Sharon O'Brien had a successful career in communications and writing. Along the way, Sharon discovered that her volunteer activities centered around helping people, so she went back to school and changed careers. Now she combines the best of both worlds as your Guide to Senior Living.

Education:

Sharon O'Brien received an undergraduate degree in Communications, and a Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology. And like many people, Sharon learned much of what she knows in the "school of life."

From Sharon O'Brien:

Coping with change is a big issue for people 50-plus. Physical, emotional, career and lifestyle changes create important decisions. Where should we focus our energy? Where do we want to live? How do we want to feel?

Managing change is easier when we share resources and information. As a psychotherapist and a member of this fast-growing age group, I bring professional and personal experience to make Senior Living an informative, entertaining and supportive resource for older adults of all ages.
